How to Choose the Right Motor Oil for Your Vehicle

The oil in your engine helps keep your vehicle running smoothly and serves three critical purposes. It lubricates critical engine components, draws heat away from the engine, and keeps it clean by capturing dirt and debris that would otherwise collect on the engine and its components. Over time, however, the oil gets too dirty to be effective.

When this happens, you’ll begin to experience problems, such as engine overheating or less efficient performance. Left unattended, it can cause the engine components to warp and wear out, or even shut done completely, resulting in a costly repair bill. That’s why regularly-scheduled oil changes are so important. Fortunately, while changing your vehicle’s oil is a critical maintenance practice that can extend the life of your vehicle, it’s also one of the least expensive. So, there’s really no excuse for putting it off.

A 3,000-mile oil change interval has been the standard for many years, but due to advances in engine and oil formulations, do you really need to change your oil that often? Maybe not. Refer to your owner’s manual for the recommended oil change interval for your specific vehicle.

But be aware. As important as mileage is to engine oil life, other factors, such as your specific vehicle, engine type, driving habits, vehicle age, and road conditions can also affect your engine oil’s lifespan and performance. If your mechanic is seeing build up at 3,000 miles and your engine oil is rated for 5,000 miles, it’s best to err on the side of caution and change your oil more frequently.

Mopar and other motor oil manufacturers continue to make advances in oil formulations designed for specific vehicle types and road conditions, so you now have more choices. Knowing which oil to use is just as important as knowing how often to change it. So, we’ve put together a guide to explain the different formulations and how to choose the right motor oil for your vehicle.
